Long known for its environmental stewardship, Quad/Graphics, the world's largest privately held commercial printer, completed a major base load energy reduction project at its printing facilities nationwide, a project initiated in 2002. Quad/Graphics has completed all of its printing facilities, which are located in Hartford, Lomira, Pewaukee, Sussex and West Allis, Wisconsin; Saratoga Springs, New York; The Rock, Georgia; and Martinsburg, West Virginia. The project is saving the company 35 million kWh annually. As a result, the Wisconsin-based printer will take almost three megawatts of power off the electrical grid, enough electricity to power 3,750 homes according to the EPA formula.
"Quad/Graphics has long believed that what's good for business is good for the environment, and this project is proof positive," said Thomas A. Quadracci, President and CEO of Quad/Graphics. "Our employees are benefiting from better quality light, and the community is benefiting from a reduction in electrical use and its associated impacts. As a good environmental steward, we will continue on this type of journey, applying new technology as it becomes available, to protect the environment."
Quad/Graphics' project is expected to have a profound environmental impact by removing 607,320 tons of carbon dioxide, 2,231 tons of sulfur dioxide, 5,177 tons of nitrous oxides and 93.6 pounds of mercury. The project has also had a major impact on their bottom line as it has saved them $2 million each year since completion - totaling $10 million.
"We appreciate Quad's willingness to be an early adopter of our technology platform born here in Wisconsin, - commented Orion President and CEO Neal Verfuerth. As one of Wisonsin's premier companies, Quad/Graphics always has had a strong reputation for its environmental leadership. We're honored to be chosen by them for this large-scale base load reduction project."
